Acts and Statutes governing Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in India. These laws regulate establishment, functioning, quality standards, governance, and funding:

TJPS  College is also governed by the following Acts:

University Grants Commission Act, 1956

  • Purpose: Establishes the UGC to coordinate, determine, and maintain standards of higher education.
  • Key Features:
    • Power to grant recognition to universities.
    • Regulates disbursement of grants to HEIs.
    • Sets norms for qualifications, curriculum, etc.

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 (Policy, not an Act)

  • Impact: Provides the latest roadmap for transforming HEIs into multidisciplinary institutions with academic autonomy.
  • Recommends establishment of the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) as a regulatory body replacing UGC & AICTE.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Act, 1987

  • Regulates technical education (engineering, management, etc.)
  • Accreditation, course approvals, infrastructure norms.

 National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) (Under UGC)

  • Not an Act but a statutory body assessing quality of institutions.
